To Appreciate the Nature of Life We Must First Understand the Cell

Life itself is amazing. It surrounds us on a daily basis from the ants in our window seal, the squirrels on the power line, to the bacteria we all have in our mouths and on our bodies. Life is indeed a gift. Every life that comes into this world is made up of cells, life of humans, plants, and animals. I know that to understand the nature of life we must first comprehend the cell, its parts, and organelles. There are two different types of cells, including prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Living bacteria is an example of something that contains prokaryotic cells.Eukaryotic cells are in just about everything, all humans and all animals. I must say that the eukaryotic cell is way more complex than the prokaryotic. A prokaryotic cell does not even hold a nucleus, which is the brain of the eukaryotic cells. Human and animals cells cannot be developed without prokaryotic cells. Even though these two different types of cells are very different they also are somewhat similar. Both contain riboso mes, cell membranes, and cytoplasm. Plant cells are eukaryotic cells but there are items that definitely set them apart. Cell walls, chlorophyll, and vacuoles are difference between the two.By plant cells having these different organelles, they function in a unique order. Each organelle in the cell do different task. Supporting all organelles in the cell is the cytoplasm. Cytoskeleton maintains the shape and gives it strength. The nucleus is a cell’s brain and operating system. The mitochondrion develops energy through cellular respiration. Ribosomes produce protein, while the nucleolus is what makes ribosomes. The vacuole is the largest organelle and it stores food, wastes, and water. The cell wall which is in all cells except animals, protect the cell and allows elements such as water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide to enter.Endoplasmic reticulum is what carries materials through the cell. Lysosomes are what break down large food molecules into smaller ones. Using energy from t he sun to produce glucose is the chloroplast (which can only be found in plant and algae). Cells make up life. We cannot live or operate without them. Each individual cell is like groups of workers that work together. Without the nucleolus which makes the ribosomes, we would not have any protein. And without protein, we as humans could not be healthy. Humans need cells and all their many organelles. Without cells, there is no life.

Looking at the situation from a socioeconomic perspective, he feels that biotechnology could help eliminate hunger in the Third world countries, by helping farmers increase crop production. But, Altieri and Rosset believe that poverty, improper management an d poor food distribution mechanisms are responsible for making people starve in underdeveloped nations.According their argument, biotechnology would not help the Third World dramatically since the lack of production is actually not the main reason behind their hunger. Although Altieri and Rosset agree about the potential benefits of biotechnology on some level, they are actually more concerned about the real motives of biotechnology corporations. They point out that transgenic crops developed by biotechnology corporations so far are merely aimed at earning more profits by making farmers solely dependent on their products.They substantiate their claim by citing instances from the past such as Monsanto Corporation’s herbicide-ready crops which were capable of withstanding the harmful effects of only the their own company’s herbicide, thereby forcing farmers to buy their products. It is quite evident that transgenic crops offer a plethora of advantages. Rauch feels that this techn ology can transform agriculture as well as the lives of poor farmers and nations. Although Altieri and Rosset share these basic values with Rauch, they advocate following a more measured use of technology complimented by social and economic reforms.

Some of the hardest parts of starting college are, feeling isolated, finding resources, and making time to study. In this essay I will make it easier for students to transact to the college life. The first week or so of college can make you feel very isolated. Being separated from friends and family can be lonely. Not knowing anyone makes it harder to find your way around. In this case you need to continue what you need to do and put yourself out there. You may not meet anyone your first week, you just have to wait and continue doing what you need to do, and remember there are lots of other students out there that are in the same boat as you. So, encourage yourself to put yourself out there. Maybe sit next to someone at lunch that is sitting alone or find someone in the common room to watch TV with. There are many opportunities to find friends you just have to give it time. Finding resources are great help on homework and make it easier on your studies. Getting the right resources for your studies is very important especially if you don’t have a laptop. Almost all of your resources will be from a book found in the library, or a book you have to order from the bookstore. If you are getting a book from the library you can just read it there or you can check it out for free. If you need a certain book for a certain class, you need to buy or rent a book from the bookstore. Ordering a book may take up to a few days or a week, since lots of other students are looking for this book too, so be prepared to wait and try to order your book early. For many students this is a lot of work to balance on your plate. As a college student you must also make time to study. One of the big differences between High School and college is that college gives a lot more homework. Therefore you must allow yourself more time to study. The average college student should give themself two hours for every hour they have in class. Which depending on how many classes you are taking, that can add up to a lot of hours. For every first time student this will be very hard to get use to and may take a couple weeks to get a routine down. I think what helps me keep up with my grades is to stay ahead of them and never fall behind. Once you fall behind it just gives you more work to do and makes it harder to get back up. It is very hard for every student in his or her first year. In order to be more comfortable with your school you must learn the transaction from High School to college. In 1965 he was appointed Solicitor General by President Lyndon Johnson, and just two years later, on June 13, 1967, President Johnson nominated Marshall as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Marshall’s nomination led to heated debates in the Senate; opposition was primarily from southern senators who hailed from states where Jim Crow laws were still in force, despite the passage of the Civil Rights Act three years earlier. Senate hearing transcripts cited one senator’s grievance that Marshall’s past record as jurist and attorney led him to believe the appointment would cause a dangerous imbalance in the Court, as he would replace Justice Clark, who was viewed as a conservative. Ultimately, Marshall’s nomination was confirmed with a 69 to 11 vote, and 20 non-voters. (U. S. Senate 24656). Sworn in by Chief Justice Earl Warren, Thurgood Marshall became the first African American Justice in the history of the United States. The 96th Justice served from 1967 until his retirement in 1991. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) BSE is a disease found in cows that contaminates the brain. It kills many cattle each year because there is no known cure. Humans can be infected by a disease called Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease and sheep can be infected with a disease called scrapie. There is no known treatment for any of the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy, including CJD. In order to prevent this disease, the beef is inspected before coming into the United States. Without antibodies, a microscope is the only other way to confirm the cow as being infected. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, other wise known as mad cow disease is â€Å"an infectious degenerative brain disease occurring in cattle† (www.dictionary.com). Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is one of many Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy’s (TSE) in animals. Humans can not be infected with BSE but if they are exposed to contaminated meat, then they are at risk of being infected with Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD). CJD is very rare and as well as BSE, cannot be treated because there has been no cure found. Figure one shows the death rate of humans infected with CJD. Once the cow is infected, the brain tissue takes on a sponge-like appearance under a microscope. This is how the disease got the name Spongiform.
